Aztecas Papermakes

Audience

    Children, crafters

Deliverables

Cohesive collection of three foldable papercraft creatures

Objective

Designed foldable Aztec-inspired toys with strong structure and unified style, taking a leadership role in a stylistically-differing group.

Date

    Fall 2024

For this project I worked with two other team members to design three foldable paper creatures.
We challenged ourselves by drawing from Aztec mythology, creating complex creatures that had no existing forms to reference.
Our target audience was children and hobbyist crafters—so we focused on making the templates colorful and cool, and easy to fold, while being instantly recognizable as Aztec inspired.
I led the concept development, coming up with our concept overall taking on the leadership mantle. My creature, the Ahuizotl, is a water creature that drags people underwater with the hand on its tail. Creating simple, sturdy, easy-to-assemble templates from such complex creatures with unique silhouettes took lots of iteration and folding many times. It was also a challenge because everyone in our group had completely different art styles, but through this challenge I improved my leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills, resulting in a colorful, imaginative set that celebrates cultural storytelling through hands-on design.
